Meet Elizabeth Sherwin
Discovering Her Passion Led to Her Success

Elizabeth Sherwin Photo

Elizabeth Sherwin came to the International Academy of Design & Technology – Seattle (IADT) after receiving Bachelor's Degrees in Theatre and Comparative Literature from the University of Washington, and attempts at several careers. While working as a sales representative selling women's snowboard clothing, she discovered that what intrigued her most was how the clothes were designed and created and how the fabrics were used and why. She couldn't deny her curiosity and interests in clothing design and development.

Elizabeth pursued this passion and contacted IADT - Seattle. She soon discovered a place where dreams are encouraged and supported. She felt confident with her decision to go back to school. Having been to school before, she knew that the amount of effort and dedication that she put into her education would be returned two-fold. Elizabeth felt confident that IADT - Seattle would provide her with that foundation she needed. She loved being given the chance to explore avenues of design and development. There are aspects of designing clothes that she found more interesting than others. She found that it was the fabrics and textiles that really excited her. However, she knew she needed to understand all aspects of clothing construction and design in order to succeed.

Elizabeth believes she would not have the job that she is currently in if it were not for her education at IADT - Seattle where she received tools and resources to promote herself to the clothing industry here in the Pacific Northwest. Attaining those tools inspired her to grow as a designer and encouraged her to try and try again, never missing an opportunity to experience fashion events and network with industry professionals.

As a Raw Materials Developer at Moving Comfort, a women's athletic apparel line based in the Northwest, she is responsible to source fabric for them. She works with fabrics and mills from all over the world, but mostly with those from Asia. She attends trade shows to discover new technology in fabrics and trims. Elizabeth is responsible for maintaining garment color, balance, and testing. She creates designs and prints using Adobe Illustrator. The learning is never ending.

Elizabeth's advice to students, "I think you have to take the bull by the horns. Follow your dream to its full potential; no one else will be able to do that for you. As much as IADT is a help for you, your education is what you make it. You will need to be motivated and confident in your work and decisions. Seek internships; get involved in the design community, read up on new developments and creations within the design world (this is so important no matter what field of interest you take). Educate yourself and take pride in your work. Ask questions and don't be afraid to take risk...it may be the best thing you've ever experienced."
